Addison Rae

Is this the perfect branding?

THE BEGINNINGS

Global pop icon Addison Rae had a very strong fan base and social media presence, but how was that enough to start a pop music career? Easy, strong branding and individuality.

Starting her TikTok account in June 2019 as a college student, Addison gained a large following during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Gaining over 88.2 million followers, and 5.3 billion likes across TikTok, her videos dancing and lip-syncing became a staple for the time. Taking part in the “Hype House” content creating space, she was able to grow her platforms into a monetization glory, but with being on the spotlight, criticism inserts itself in the picture.

Addison received a fair share of toxicity around the platform, with people being frustrated at her fast-pace growth, users did not shy away from harsh criticism. Needless to say, she still gained an immense fan base and became a big name throughout the USA.

This part was so effective not just because of numbers, but mostly the branding it created. Addison framed herself as a relatable, accessible  individual, which can be the perfect formula for her large following in social media.

However, being relatable is not building a brand by itself. It builds attention, but not necessarily a fan base. It is clear that this TikTok phase wasn’t the end goal but it definitely helped her to gain an audience that could be used later in her music career.

DISTANCE FROM SOCIALS AND DIET PEPSI

After multiple years in the platform, Addison suddenly stopped posting dance videos and took time to wonder what direction she was taking professionally. In August 9th 2024, Addison released her now RIAA Platinum Certified single “Diet Pepsi”. Safe to say, the public went crazy over this. It was a completely different image and side of her, no one had ever seen before. An upbeat, dance-pop song released by a TikToker? No one would have imagined this was her next stage.

The music video now has over 49 Million reproductions is YouTube and over 679 Million streams on Spotify. This was the beginning of her as a pop artist and no longer a content creator. Featuring a sexy and monochromatic aesthetic, Addison came to establish herself as a global artist.

This “rebranding” wasn’t accidental. When she reduced her engagement in socials, which is something that audiences were used to, Addison changed the expectations and made people feel intrigued. The release of “Diet Pepsi” didn’t only made her an artist, it introduced a new identity to the public. The shift was very sharp and intentional. This made the moment feel bigger, more unexpected, and more memorable in many ways.

ADDISON RAE: THE ALBUM SUCCESS

Following the massive success Diet Pepsi had in the global charts, Rae released the lead single “Fame is a Gun” for her upcoming album self-titled “Addison Rae”. In June 6th 2025, she released the 12 song full album featuring her hits “Headphones On” and “Aquamarine”.

The Aesthetic of the album followed a heavy late 90s early 2000s vibe that immediately grasped the public’s attention. With many inspiration on pop princess Britney Spears, Addison created a choreography heavy and aesthetically pleasing repertoire. After gaining so much traction to her music, Addison shortly started touring her new album with opening night in Dublin (which I attended), and continued to earn a place in stages across different festivals worldwide.

The aesthetic direction of the album was heavily influenced by nostalgia which is a clear trend nowadays, it is a very strong tool to have under your belt. Even for younger audiences, this aesthetic feels fresh. For older audiences, it creates a sense of familiarity. Rather than just referencing past pop icons, the project presents it in a way that feels current. The balance between familiarity and “reinvention” is what allows this to feel fresh and nostalgic at the same time.

Nominations for the Grammys 2026 came out and she was nominated for “Best New Artist” following the large success of her debut album. Yes she may have had an advantage with her following, but Addison has proved time and time again that she is passionate about music. Not far after, Coachella’s 2026 lineup came out and she was included as a performer.

WHY THE BRANDING WORKS

Addison had already a large following before debuting her single, which helped her gain connections into the music industry quite easily. With a vison board and a dream, Rae secured a contract with Columbia Records in late 2023. The music is pop heavy, and the choreography following it made her establish a strong persona. Following a bright yellow and hot pink Y2K aesthetic, reminded people of what pop music used to look and feel like. She has the charisma and the talent, but exposing it is not easy, especially in such a cut throat industry.

People resonate with her, as a 25 year old who initiated her career in social media, it made it seem possible for people to get where she is now. It’s very clear where her inspirations come from and the representation she wants to give.

What makes this branding so engaging is that it’s not for everyone, but rather it wants to build discourse. Social media is not about just liking something, but also creating conversation around it. Sometimes, something being controversial will be more widely spread than just a positive outcome. Addison became very unpredictable with her career progression, which made people look her way and put her under the spotlight. Obviously her already existing platforms following made it much easier to gain traction but she didn’t abandon her fanbase She brought them along into a new era, allowing her career to grow with them.

Addison’s rebranding did not stem from doing the same thing she was already doing it and evolving, but rather made a whole 180 shift. Her branding does works because it is cohesive but also completely different from her past. The music, visuals, performances, and public image all follow the exact same narrative. This has allowed audiences to recognise and understand her identity quickly, even as it evolves.

OUTCOMES

Addison Rae came to demonstrate that the modern pop culture success is no longer defined by talent or visibility, but about positioning. Her transition into music was not just a career shift, but a complete strategic change. This new image of her is mainly based in the narrative, aesthetic, and the engagement with audiences.

In an industry that is so constantly changing and competition keeps rising, her image shows that standing out doesn’t come from doing more, but from doing things differently. The question is not about her branding being perfect, but how intentional it was and if this makes it work long-term.
